West Park School is located in Broderick Road, Johnsonville, a northern suburb of Wellington. We are at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge and below Mt Kaukau.
Education of children from Years 1 to 6 is our goal. The school mission statement is Valuing Learning.
Students at West Park School are organised into syndicates – Junior Syndicate (Years 1 and 2), Middle Syndicate (Years 3 and 4) and Senior Syndicate (Years 5 and 6). Our ethnic mix as at March 2010 was 56% Pakeha/European, 10% Maori, 7% Pacific Island and 27% Asian.
Teachers are critical to the success of all learning experiences that pupils are involved in at West Park. There are 29 teaching and support staff employed to ensure maximum learning opportunities are offered and the school operates effectively.
Parents are welcome in the school. Not only are they actively involved on the Board of Trustees and the Home and School Association, but they also assist on trips, camp, with sports coaching and in the classrooms.
All curriculum subjects are covered in a balanced, well paced and thorough way. Emphasis is placed on numeracy and literacy skills and understanding, with regular monitoring, assessment and evaluation. Integrated themes enhance the learning opportunities, with challenging, innovative and many problem solving activities a main part of the programme.
Roll numbers are increasing, with 356 pupils currently on the roll. Extra part-time teachers and teacher aides assist with remedial, enrichment, ESOL and GATE programmes.
Kaleidoscope of colours greets the visitor in our administration area. Bright yellow, dark blue, mandarin, bright red and purple set the scene. Circles and triangles feature in our logo. Refer to the explanation of what it stands for.
